Tracey Staehle's CoreBlast DVD (released 2007) Review

I am an intermediate/advanced exerciser who is always looking for non-traditional core workouts, so when I heard that Tracey Staehle - who has a reputation for producing innovative workouts for advanced exercisers - was producing a new DVD utlising a variety of equipment, I was very excited. I have Tracey's earlier core workout, Tracey Staehle's Core Strength & Conditioning DVD, 45 minutes of very tough core work using a stability ball, so I was expecting something of similar intensity. What I got, however, was 50 minutes of core work I can barely feel. I would rate "Core Blast" as suitable for beginners or low-intermediates at best.

"Core Blast" provides nine mini-workouts, each about five minutes long, grouped into three 15-minute segments - standing abs; abs on the stability ball, step or BOSU; and floor abs. The standing abs include five minutes each of boxer's bobs and weaves, oblique work with a dumbbell, and medicine ball work. This section is fun and provides a nice warm-up.

The step/BOSU section isn't very challenging. In one exercise called "get up and get down", you sit on the step or BOSU and quickly stand up without using your hands for support. It looked tough on the preview clip I saw, but was surprisingly easy.

The floor section includes planks and a different take on Pilates. The Pilates was fun, but again, too easy.

Throughout the DVD, there is a lot of giggling and banter between Tracey and her background exercisers, one of whom is her sister Jill. This is cute at first but gets very irritating on repeated viewings. Tracey repeatedly refers to Jill as a "rock star" - a descriptor which even appears on the back cover of the DVD!

All up, after doing "Core Blast" several times, I really felt I was wasting my workout time. As well, it's a bother to lug out all that equipment then only use it for five minutes.

If you want challenging ab work which uses different equipment, I would recommend Cathe Friedrich's Hardcore Series: CORE MAX which includes three 20-minute workouts using your bodyweight, a stability ball and a medicine ball; or Mindy Mylrea: All About Abs which is tougher than "Core Max" and incorporates three 15-minute workouts using a medicine ball, a stability ball and your own bodyweight, as well as a bonus 10-minute segment using Mindy's own "gliding disks".

Wai Lana Easy Starter Exercise Kit Review

I purchased the Golden Earth Pilates/Yoga Exercise ball kit, so I don't have all of the pieces of this kit, but I felt obligated to warn people away from this if they want to use the DVD.The ball is fine - that's not hard to do.The video is useless and more than half of it is advertising for other products by the company.

The exercises on the video would be fine except that with every single move the narrator says "hold for x seconds" or "repeat 10-20 times" and then they immediately go to the next move.This requires one to STOP what they're doing, pause the video, count it out themselves, and then restart the video.Difficult at best, and very annoying.

Fortunately, I purchased the kit at a discount store for a lot less money and didn't really plan to use the video.If I had, I'd have taken it back.

Stamina Ab/Hyper Bench Review

Note that this review refers to the identical Stamina Ab/Hyper bench bought directly from Amazon [...] (with free super saver shipping) and not from Target [...].You can locate the Amazon.com item by searching Stamina ab/hyper bench in the Sports and Outdoors section.

Delivery: the item arrived promptly and was well packaged; there was no damage.

Assembly: uncomplicated and took under 30 minutes; instructions were straightforward; the bench can be easily folded and stored away.

Country of origin: China.

Construction: the steel frame is fairly light, but sturdy; no rickety parts; every single joint is thoroughly welded; the bench does not rock or tip during exercise; paint job is A+; padding is a little on a flimsy side and I do not expect it to last as long as my previous bench; the manufacturer specifies 250 lbs as a user weight limit.

Dimensions: the seat is only 28.5 inches long, so decide for yourself whether this is adequate for you; I would estimate that anyone over 6 ft tall will have difficulty using this product for sit-ups.
The vertical component of the bench (tilted 40 degrees and used for back hyperextension exercises) has adjustable height and will accommodate just about any sized human (but do not forget the 250 lbs weight limit); it does excellent job isolating the lower back muscles.

Overall appearance: it looks like a quality product overall, from stitching to glossy finish; the design is certainly compact and clever for what this bench does.

Price: $[...] for a bench like this, including delivery, is a good value.

Rating: 4 stars; there are nicer products out there, but they are all bulkier and more expensive.

GoFit 10-Pound Yellow Kettlebell with Vinyl Coating, Iron Core Training DVD and Exercise Booklet Review

I had never heard of the kettlebell workout but through a random search on Amazon I found it and was intrigued. There were very few reviews but the premise sounded like something I would enjoy so I took a shot and ordered it.

In order for you to make a well informed decision in regard to purchasing this product or not I want to share with you my fitness level as well as my experience using the Kettlebell and Video in comparison to other fitness activities as well as who I personally think could benefit from this and who I think shouldn't consider it.

My Fitness Level And What Size Kettlebell
I have a recumbent exercise bike at home and I workout on that at least 5 days a week. I do 1 hour on the bike at least 3 days a week (sometimes 5) and the other days I never do less than 45 minutes I also use 2-3 pound hand weights for half the time I am on the bike. After I get off the bike I then do some floor exercises and hand weights between 3 and 5 pounds each. Prior to starting this fitness routine which I gradually worked up to over 8 months ago, I was recovering from some very serious health problems. Prior to that I had been in excellent shape most of my adult life always working out at the gym. Moving on...I ordered the 10 pound kettlebell and I am thrilled with that amount of weight, it's actually the perfect amount for me. Any heavier, I would not be able to do it and think I could easily injure myself. So, I personally think if you are in excellent shape and used to lifting weights you MAY want the 15 pounder but the exercises you will be doing with the KB are so different that I think it would be much better for most people to work up to the higher weight and not jump in with the 15 pound size.

The Exercises
So, the exercises you will be doing with the kettlebell are full range of motions with both arms, and a TON of squats. I have been using the kettlebell after I get off of the bike and can tell you currently I can't last more than 15 minutes. I personally subscribed to working up to things so I felt great after I finished, I will continue doing the bike then the kettlebell for 15 minutes for 1 week and then move up to 20 or 25 minutes etc...

The Workout
For me, this is one serious workout workout. What I mean by that is, this is no step class or kickboxing, this is super hard core. Again, for my physical state this is how I experience the workout. Now if you are in much better shape than me, it will be easier for you or if you are just starting an exercise routine it will be harder...it's all relative.The moves you perform really need to be done with absolute correct form and that is what I really concentrate on in order to get the most out of it. The proper form is not difficult to get the hang of at all. And, like all other exercises, you should go at your own pace.

The DVD
This is the biggest disappointment. I thought the DVD was going to be a real workout type of DVD where it was entertaining and there would be a class you were following or at least an instructor. No, that's not the case. Basically there is a woman performing the exercises who does not speak, rather the instructor speaks but is not seen. WEIRD. There are also breaks between each exercise. It's very boring and I mean VERY boring. But, here's the good part. The DVD does teach you how to do each exercise properly and really that's all you need. I don't need to watch someone to motivate myself, I am very motivated plus you really can't have the correct form if you are watching someone as you are doing some of these moves. What I do is I tape a ton of shows that I never get to watch that are the real riveting types that I'm very interested in....i.e. American Justice, Mystery Diagnosis or one of my favorites Animal Precinct and I watch those when I am doing my bike or my weights or the Kettlebell and the time flies. I basically use the Kettlebell as another weight and cardio workoutalong with my bike and I just follow the proper form doing numerous repetitions; it's working out great for me. I *may* buy another DVD but I doubt it -though if you enjoy those - I would say go for it because the one that comes with the kettlebell is limited.

Who Should And Who Shouldn't
Anyone interested in exercise and enjoys the convenience of working out at home should definitely get this. I love it and it's REALLY good exercise and I can't possibly see someone not getting into better shape with this. If you have knee problems, I would not recommend this to you unless you have no problems with squats. If you want to tighten your booty and tone your arms and legs... ORDER NOW!!

The Kettlebell workout is such a fantastic change from the usual; it's a lot of fun, challenging and an excellent overall workout. The KB itself is very small and easy to store almost anywhere. I can recommend this workout without reservation, just concentrate on your form and take it slow! I truly hope this review has been helpful in your decision to purchase The GoFit KettleBell (10 LB) and DVD set or not, I'm thrilled with mine and look forward to doing it every day!

Slendertone System Arms with Controller Review

I purchased the Slendertone with hopes to be ready for summer. What a disappointment. The first and second time it worked great, then the electronics went on it. I called the Slendtone folks who thought connections were bad, so I put new pads on (which cost another 14.00 on top of the 189.00 I already invested) got one treatment, then on fritz again. Sent back to Amazon thinking I must just have a lemon. Same issue with the second, only worse. Only got one treatment before it went on fritz again. Called Slendertone again, they didn't even want to bother with trying to correct for figure out problem only send me another one.
Save your money folks! Find another company or stick with the weights. The concept is good, the few times it worked it felt like it was making a difference and would have yielded the desired results.

Giant Xtra Vertical Knee Raise Review

This is the Yukon CDL-153, one of the few decent dip/chin/VKR stations on the market for serious strength trainers.The manufacturer's price is actually $300, and the MFR charges about $50 in shipping.The standard price for it on the internet is $380 with "free" shipping.However, none of the companies that sell it actually stock it;they just charge you an additional $30 for the privilege of drop-shipping it to you from the manufacturer.This is true for the company that Amazon sources this product from (Bayou Fitness).

Mine came missing the oval brackets, which the manufacturer wants people to use to prevent them from bending the tubing from cranking the bolts down too hard.I called the MFR on a Thursday and received the replacement brackets via FedEx on the following Wednesday.The MFR was pleasant and courteous.

This product is sturdily built, unlike most other C/D/VKR stations.The other stations typically claim to support up to 220-250 lbs.However, they don't employ supports for the dip arms or chin bar;they actually just bolt or weld a metal bar horizontally against the vertical frame, so even if the total load is well below the specified weight limit, the chin and dip bars tend to flex a lot.

The Yukon has strong supports for the dip arms and chin bar, and also supports for the vertical frame against the floor rails on the chin side.The stated capacity for the frame is 350 lbs, so even a 300 lb. lifter with 50 lbs. on a weight belt could exercise on this machine.However, there is no brace for the frame on the dip side, so there is some flex of the uprights even with a total load of only 225 lbs.Also, bafflingly, there is not enough clearance between the chin-side frame brace and the 3/8" nut provided for the support bolt on either the left or right side of my machine, so I couldn't attach put the supplied nut on the brace on either side.

There are a few other companies that make decent D/C/VKR stations, some of which sell online, but their products run $100-300 more than this unit, even without shipping.Tuff-stuff's VKR has better frame bracing (for around $600), but Body-Solid's units are equivalent to fragile junk you see in the chain stores. I would recommend this piece over the competition, and maybe even trying to find someone who could fabricate the dip-side braces for you out of 2" tubing.

I'm not an authority on kettlebells, but I have been using them regularly for a couple of years now. I started out with GoFit's kettlebells because of the price point compared to Dragondoor and others, and also the fact that I could actually go into a store and try one out.

While they are fine if you're starting out, or doing exercises like Windmills, Renegade Rows, swings, the handles are of pretty poor quality, and make moves like slingshots or even snatches quite painful. I've had painful callouses due to them. I would not write this review otherwise, but since the real power of kettlebell training comes from the high rep, ballistic, full range of motion exercises such as snatches, swings, slingshots etc.,I believe that when you are ready to use this as a serious tool for conditioning, that you consider a kettlebell that has better handles, and distribution of weight.
Also - the PVC coating on the kettlebell is really painful if you have hair on your arms and try to do cleans.

Ok kettlebell, but really, invest in one of the original ones. I had 2 of these when i started out, and I dont use them anymore.

Bryan Kest's Original Power Yoga :: Weight Loss and Power Abs Review

While I was most impressed with Bryan Kest's "Power Yoga Complete Collection" released in 1995, this 2003 release was disappointing in more ways than one:

(1) Bryan Kest: excessive talking and zero personal demonstration;
(2) Little in the way of killer techniques to tweak/improve on standard asanas;
(3) Ultra slow-paced walk through the Vinyasa flow;
(4) The so-called "power yoga" abs routines are but exercises drawn from pilates practice; and

Cathe Friedrich's Basic Step + Body Fusion Review

This is such a good workout.There are actually two full step routines here.The first is only step and the second is interval step.Then, after both of those, there are some targeted toning workouts.This will make you sweat, huff and puff and tone your body and lose weight.Cathe is a good instructor.She knows her stuff and she is tough.All the workouts are really well cued and the choreography is good.The combinations are easy to follow and she uses easy transitions to get you into the next step pattern.You need dumbells and a stability ball and also an X-ertube for the toning workout.
This is very do-able and fun.It will get your heart pumping and it's challenging.It's everything you could want in a workout.Who needs to go to the gym when you can do this so easily at anytime you choose?

I bought this off of an infomercial three (maybe more) years ago and I still love the workouts. The DVDs give you the option of running through the workout in order, or using shuffle to change it up. The 25 minute core workout is effective given the short time frame and the advanced workout is truly challenging. I actually enjoy that Gunnar has the viewer standing, sitting and moving around. It helps pass the time. I'm glad to see that Amazon still sells this as I've recently recommended this workout to several friends. My stability ball has survived two moves and is still going strong. Overall I was very happy with this product and only wish that Gunnar made more workouts for me to buy.

I've had the product for a little over a month.I use it for a few minuites just before I go to bed.I started feeling a difference in my back in just a couple of weeks.I used to wake up with stiffness, now theres none.I definitley recommend this to everyone with lower back pain.
The only cons I can think of:

Its very heavy. When the box arrives, don't move it alone or you will hurt your back even more. Don't even think that you will be folding it and putting it away ever.
The ankle restaints are a little uncomfortable when you are fully inverted.Wearing a pair of sneakers helps a lot though.

Thebrackets are installed with a total of eight woodscrews. The brackets are supposed to be screwed into studs, but some door frames don't have studs where the brackets need to be installed.

The Bonus P90X Workout DVD is actually an advertisement to buy the P90X workout system.

The Power Trainer itself seems to be well made and should ultimately work for me.

I read product reviews of lots of other inversion tables, and decided to go with this one as I needed it for my clinic. This table is rated for 600 lb., over 2 times what any other tables I saw were rated for. It went together easily in about 1 1/2 hrs., and the only tricky part was the frame itself, and then only because the tolerances are tight, which now that it is together, will prevent any squirreliness. This table is particularly useful in that you can be face up or face down, and can easily use it either way by yourself and not be concerned about getting stuck. It also allows for the physician / body worker to work on the client in one of several pre set and rock solid positions. It doesn't fold up, so make a permanent space. Overall is an excellent product with tight tolerances in its manufacture. I've had several over the past 30 yrs., and this is the best I've seen.

Thera-Band Exercise Balls - Pro Series SCP Review

I bought the red 55cm-size ball and my husband used an air compressor to blow it up.Trouble is, it was a little smaller than it was supposed to be when he finished.I mean, the little measuring tape they give with it was measuring the size it was supposed to be, but the actual size wasn't 55cm!I was sitting on it with less than a 90° angle between my thighs and calves.He made it a little bigger with more air and now it is fine, altho it is bigger than the tape measure says it should be.I am only 4' 11 1/2" tall, and should need the yellow ball for my height, but decided to go with the bigger red ball.It's a good thing I did!I think whatever size you are supposed to get, you should move it up one more size, if you want it to fit your body correctly.

As far as the quality of the ball, it's very strong and sturdy.It hasn't leaked at all in the month that I have had it.It's very comfortable to sit on and works very well with the exercises I am supposed to do.I would buy another Thera-Band ball, if I needed another one...I only gave it 4 stars because of the size issue, not it's performance.

Amber Sporting Goods Space Saver VKR Workout Tower Review

First off: I received the shipment missing two pieces from the manufacturer.I emailed them requesting assistance.They immediately shipped the missing two pieces to me.I can't fault a company for an honest mistake, but I will commend them for so quickly and easily fixing it.

Secondly, the unit, itself.
A) Construction:I was able to put it together by myself in under 2 hours.
B) Exercises:The pullups are good.Good widegrip and normal pullup options.Very little movement when using.The dips wobble just a little, but the tower is certainly stable.Also, because the dips are on the same side as the pullup bar, there needs to be a slight bit of care to avoid the overhead pullup bar when raising on the dips.This does not hinder the exercise, just requires a little getting used to.Although I don't use them as much, the pushup bars and vertical knee raise bars work well.
C)Space:this is why I purchased this equipment.I had a limited space and this machine excels at that.Because the exercises are all on the same side, the machine fits smooothly up against a wall.I am more than willing to be a little more attentive when doing dips in order to have the equipment fit where I wanted it to.
D)Bottomline:I wanted a pullup and dips machine and I had a limited space to put it in and the Amber VKR Tower - Space Saver definitely met my needs, along with adding two additional exercise options, and all for a very reasonable price ($130 + $55 S&H).I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Nice product,very well made. It was very easy to assemble,took about an hour. I've been doing crunches on the floor for months w/an assist type machine. Body Solid GCAB360 CAM Series Ab / Back Machine Review

Overall the experience was good. The Ab/Back Machine arrived within the shipping date window. Shipping was free, that was nice & Amazon's price was better then direct purchase from the company.Set up procedure could be challenging for some as a parts list and exploded view of how the parts were assembled was all that was provided. I'm mechanically inclined & did not have any problems & machine was set up in about 3 hours. I would have liked an operator's manual as I'm sure there are features that I have yet to master. Both myself and my 16 yr old son like the machine and use it serveal times a week. I also have a Body Solid leg press machine which I have owned for 15 years. Both the ab and the leg machine are good values.

Diamondback Fitness 1260Ef Elliptical Trainer Review

I've been wanting to buy an elliptical for months now.Did my research on consumer reports, shopped around.I must admit that I was a little nervous about buying such a large purchase through Amazon, but I'm glad I did.I noticed the price dropped to $1699 from $1899 and that was the motivation I needed to pull the trigger.

Shipping Five Stars
I elected to do the free shipping option.My impression was that this unit would not ship for 3-5 days and that it would probably take another 5 days to get to me, so I did not expect this unit to arrive for 1.5 to 2 weeks.In reality, I ordered this product on a Friday night and the product was in my possession on the next Wednesday afternoon.3 business days is awesome in my book, especially when it's free.I live in the southeast, so not sure if your results would be the same if you live elsewhere.If anything, this was too quick, because the expected time frame was going to be that Friday and it came 2 days earlier.If you are trying to take off work to be available for the shipment, this could be a problem.The elliptical came in a crate and is too much to handle for one person.You need at least 2 strong guys to help you move this unit into your home.I was able to slide it into my garage and uncrate from there.Even disassembled, the base part of this unit is really heavy.I had to get a friend to help me move it up one level of stairs.

Assembly4 Stars
As hinted above, this unit is not fully assembled.I would like to think I am handy, but this assembly could be a little tricky.Here are the things that tripped me up.

First, there is a rear foor stablizer bar that needs to be installed.The instructions give the wrong screw size, but the screw pack clearly labels the screws to be used for what assembly.For this step, make sure you use the longer screws as labeled in the screw pack, not the size given in the instruction manual.

Next, there is a control mast that slides into the base.One thing the instuctions failed to mention (or I failed to pick up on) is a small grey flexible rubber flush piece designed to cover the circular gap between the base plastic housing and the control mast.DO NOT FORGET to slide this piece on before you secure the control mast to the base.

Lastly, becareful when you install the handle swing poles.It's easy to get these inverted.They are labeled "L" and "R", but this was very hard to find and I ended up putting the wrong one on first.Find the "L" "R" label before you start screwing them down.

Overall Operation 5 stars
This unit runs really smooth and quiet.I was concerned about buying an elliptical before I had the chance to try it out, so I only relied on the write up in consumer reports.I have not had a chance to try the provided heart rate attachment, but the fixed handle grips do have a built in heart rate sensor, and that seems to operate correctly.It has several programs for all levels of elliptical users.

In summary, I am very pleased with this elliptical and glad I bought it from Amazon.Make sure you have help when you move it and becareful when you assemble it.The footprint for this machine was a little larger than I expected, make sure you have enough space for it.

Lean Abs Machine Review

Pros: Challenging and effective for the abs.

Cons: Difficult to manage, limited use, not enough resistance, very expensive

I bought this machine because I thought that I would be able to work effectively on all parts of my body. I visited leanabs.com and since I saw that there were huge variety of workouts one can do with this machine, I thought it would be a great deal. The only thing I liked about this was the burn it can give to the abs. It works like an ab roller only with resistance making it a lot more challenging, and plus you don't have to be on the ground/floor. But the positions for working the abs are very limited, just do a few leans that's it, I'm afraid it will only take a few months until I'm bored with this machine. With this machine you are NOT going to build muscles or mass, either on your legs or arms. There's just NOT enough resistance for those body parts. What I was disappointed the most of was the difficulty it can give you when you want to switch workout positions. For example, if you want to do the abdominal lean, leg press, thigh lift, chest press, etc. etc., you're going to have to disassemble the support pad, EACH TIME. And let me tell you just detaching the support pad was hard because the tube was a little too big for the hole of the support pad. Unless you're a body builder man(which I doubt one would purchase this machine), you are probably going to have a tough time taking the big ol' support pad in and out every time you want to do an exercise. Overall, I gave this 3 stars, because I liked the way it produced that burning feeling on my stomach, however, the price was just too high for an equipment that only works one part of your body effectively. I think the Lean Abs machine should cost only [...]. Not over [...]!
